Hyperion S.A.F.E. Center
Free household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off inside the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Playa del Rey.
Hyperion S.A.F.E. Center hours are Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a winter closure from December 24 to January 3. The drop-off sits on the grounds of the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Playa del Rey, and the plant’s own security guards check a valid driver’s license at the entrance. LASAN also names it as a center that takes business waste, by appointment only.
Serves: Los Angeles trash pickup and drop-off rules.
What this center takes and what it does not
Residents bring household hazardous waste and electronics free: paint, solvents and cleaners, motor oil, filters and other car fluids, pesticides and pool chemicals, aerosol cans, propane and other gas cylinders, fluorescent and LED bulbs, household and car batteries, lithium-ion batteries from e-bikes and e-scooters, TVs, computers, phones and cables, and home sharps in a lidded puncture-proof container. It does not take ammunition or explosives, radioactive or medical waste, smoke detectors, electric vehicle batteries, or fans, heaters, air conditioners and vacuums. Business waste runs on a separate track here: it is taken by appointment only and for a fee, under the VSQG program for small businesses, with appointments booked through Clean Harbors at 310-387-1071 or 4HCESQG@cleanharbors.com.
About this site
The center is at 7660 W. Imperial Highway, on the grounds of the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, so the plant’s security controls the way in. Enter at Gate B from Imperial Highway; the queue for the drop-off starts on Vista del Mar. When volume is high, left turns into the facility from Imperial Highway are not allowed.
Rules at every S.A.F.E. Center
City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County residents may use the S.A.F.E. Centers, and staff ask for the address where the waste came from. The centers can close or run shorter hours in bad weather. The per-visit limits, the holiday closures and the rest of the operator’s rules are on its listing, LA Sanitation.
