How to get couches, mattresses, appliances and other bulky items picked up in US cities and counties.

Bulk trash pickup is almost never part of the weekly cart. Four patterns cover most places: you book an appointment, often with a yearly limit; the city comes on a set schedule; you set a few items out with regular trash; or you haul the load to a drop-off site that may charge by weight or item. Refrigerators, tires and construction debris often have their own rules. The city’s or hauler’s booking page decides.

Atlanta

Single-family residents get 12 free bulk collections a year. Since February 16, 2026, bulk comes on your regular collection day, but each one must be booked at least one business day ahead in the collection tool or app, through @ATL311 or at 404-546-0311. One collection is up to 8 cubic yards, set out no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before. Up to four tires are taken, but other auto parts and building materials are refused. Each collection beyond 12 costs $349.96, and a booked pickup with nothing out still counts.

Austin

Bulk and brush pickups are on demand, up to three appointments per service per calendar year, booked in the Austin Recycles app, online ↗ or through Austin 3-1-1 (512-974-2000). It refuses brush, household trash, hazardous materials, mirrors, remodeling debris and tires on rims. A supplemental bulk pickup beyond the three costs $184 plus disposal.
