Which holidays move trash and recycling pickup in US cities and counties, and the next change in each.
Each city or hauler sets its own holiday trash schedule. Three patterns cover most places: the holiday’s pickup and every later one that week slide a day, with Friday moving to Saturday; the holiday’s pickup is skipped and waits for the next regular day; or only the holiday’s route moves. Many places change collection on a few named holidays only, often Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The city’s or hauler’s lookup decides for your address.

Atlanta
Seven city holidays bring a one-day delay: the city collects nothing that day, and pickup runs a day late for the rest of that week. In the city’s 2026 notices, Friday routes were served on Saturday, carts out by 7 a.m. Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 12, and Veterans Day, November 11, keep the regular schedule. Next delay: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, then Christmas, Friday, December 25. The Solid Waste Holiday Collections ↗ page lists them.

Austin
Only New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas move collection. If your day falls on the holiday or later that week, it slides one day; a weekend holiday moves nothing, and My Schedule shows each slide. Next: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, when Thursday collections go on Friday, November 27, and Friday collections on Saturday, November 28.

Boerne
WM collects in Boerne on every holiday except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. On those three there is no collection, and the city posts the shifted days for the rest of the week. For the 2025-26 season, Thursday routes moved to Friday and Friday routes to Saturday. Bulk and brush stay in the second full week of the month.

Charlotte
Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks run on a one-day delay; on the other city holidays left in 2026, Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Veterans Day, collection runs as scheduled. Mecklenburg County’s drop-off centers keep their own holiday closings, including Veterans Day. Next: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, when Thursday collection goes on Friday, November 27, and Friday collection on Saturday, November 28; the county centers close Thursday. The 2026 Holiday Collection Schedule ↗ lists the rest.

Chicago
On 11 City holidays in 2026 there is no garbage service citywide and no recycling in zones 2 and 4. Zones 1, 3, 5 and 6 skip recycling only on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In a holiday week, keep carts accessible all week, because the exact service day may vary. Next: Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2026, with no garbage citywide and no recycling in zones 2 and 4; the Holiday Garbage Schedule ↗ lists the rest.

Columbus
There is no trash collection on 11 city holidays, and color-zone trash days move forward one day after each: a Tuesday becomes a Wednesday until the next holiday. Recycling and yard waste on or after the holiday that week run one day late, with Friday’s on Saturday, and Good Friday changes nothing. Next: Indigenous Peoples Day, Monday, October 12, 2026, with no trash pickup and the colors rotating one day, while recycling and yard waste keep their regular days and the convenience centers close Tuesday, October 13 (details), then Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, when the city convenience centers close too. Find My Collection Day ↗ shows your current day.

Dallas
For many city holidays, garbage, recycling and brush and bulky collection continue without interruption. When a holiday does change service, Sanitation Services posts a holiday collection advisory on its homepage ↗, so check it before each holiday.

El Paso
El Paso’s Environmental Services Department posts each holiday change in a city news release a few days ahead. In the 2025-26 season, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s each stopped both bins on the Thursday and Friday of that week; a single make-up day took gray trash bins only, and blue recycling bins waited for their next regular day. Next: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026; in 2025 the gray-bin make-up came the following Monday.

Falls Church
Falls Church posts a Waste and Compost Holiday Service Schedule each year on its Trash, Recycling & Organics page. In 2026 no holiday changes residential collection: every Wednesday pickup runs as usual, including Thanksgiving week (November 26) and Christmas week (December 25), and New Year’s Eve. Only commercial customers slide to Friday after New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. If a holiday ever moves residential collection, carts go out by 7 a.m. Thursday and come back Thursday evening.

Fort Worth
Only Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day change collection: that day’s routes and the rest of the week move one day later, into Saturday, and every other holiday, Veterans Day included, runs normally. On the first pickup day after each of the three, two extra bags of garbage beside the cart go without a charge. Next: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, when Thursday routes go on Friday, November 27, and Friday routes on Saturday, November 28; the Drop-Off Stations close Thursday and Friday. The 2026 Holiday Collection Schedule ↗ lists them.

Glendora
Athens Services, Glendora’s franchise hauler, observes six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. When one falls on a weekday, collection from that day through the end of the week runs one day late, so Friday routes are picked up on Saturday. A holiday on a Saturday or Sunday changes nothing. Ahead: Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026 (Thursday routes Friday, Friday routes Saturday); Christmas Day, December 25, 2026, and New Year’s Day, January 1, 2027 (Friday routes Saturday); Memorial Day, May 31, 2027, and Labor Day, September 6, 2027 (every route that week one day late). Independence Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, so nothing moves.

Hillsborough County
County customers get no collection on eight county holidays and no make-up days: garbage, recycling and yard waste skip the holiday and resume on your next regular collection day, and the county drop-off facilities close. Veterans Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas keep the regular schedule, and on New Year’s Day recycling and yard waste run while garbage does not. Next: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, with no collection, then Christmas Day, Friday, December 25; the Holiday Curbside Collection Schedule ↗ lists the rest.

Next: Christmas, Friday, December 25, 2026, when the drop-off sites close too.

Joplin
Joplin’s curbside pickup is by Republic Services under the city contract. When Republic observes a holiday there is no pickup that day; the homes scheduled for it are collected the next day, and the rest of the week runs one day behind, with Friday’s homes collected on Saturday. The city announced that rule for Memorial Day and Labor Day 2026 and has announced shifts for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day in past years. Each change is posted in the city’s News Flash, and Republic’s schedule lookup shows holiday changes by address. The Joplin Recycling Center closes on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and the Friday after, and Christmas.

Lafayette
Acadiana Waste Services suspends residential collection in Lafayette on four holidays only: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The next holiday is Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2026, and Christmas Day and New Year’s Day 2027 both fall on Fridays, so only Friday routes move to Saturday. Yard waste follows the trash day.
