How to read a Wednesday holiday
The slide starts midweek. Veterans Day 2026 falls on a Wednesday, so in a one-day-slide city Monday and Tuesday keep their days, and the holiday’s routes and every later pickup that week move one day later. New Bedford, Philadelphia and Washington, DC work this way; DC serves Wednesday routes on Thursday, November 12.
Moved earlier, or only part of the service stops. Nashville collects Wednesday routes early, on Monday, November 9. Columbus skips trash on the day and runs recycling and yard waste one day late from Wednesday to Friday. Chicago skips garbage citywide but recycling only in zones 2 and 4.
Carts go out, drop-off sites close. Most programs here collect as usual, and Denver calls the day a working holiday. Drop-off sites are another matter: Phoenix’s transfer stations, the Knox County convenience centers around Knoxville, the county centers near Charlotte and Brooks Landfill in Wichita all close.
