Wichita trash pickup: collection days, recycling and bulk waste rules.

Wichita trash pickup is not a city service. You hire one of the seven haulers the City of Wichita permits, and that hauler sets your pickup day, your cart size and your bill. Since November 2012 every permitted hauler must offer single-stream curbside recycling and a lower rate for a smaller cart. Hazardous waste goes free to Sedgwick County’s facility on Stillwell Street. What trips people up: no hauler takes yard waste or bulky items in the recycling cart.

  • Who collects: no city collection: residents contract a permitted hauler from the city’s list; Available Waste Haulers ↗
  • Your pickup day: depends on your hauler, which assigns the day when you sign up
  • Holiday changes: each hauler sets its own; ICT Trash holiday schedule ↗
  • Missed pickup: call your hauler at the number on the city’s list; a hauler that is not on the list, or refuses recycling or a smaller cart, goes to Environmental Health at 316-268-8351

Permitted haulers in Wichita

A permitted hauler holds a contract with the city’s Environmental Health office and carries a city decal on both sides of the truck. The city publishes its list for reference only and endorses no company. These are the seven haulers on the city’s residential list, with phone numbers and websites as the city lists them; rates and service areas are what each hauler publishes on its own site.

What every permitted hauler must offer

In November 2012 the City of Wichita enacted a Solid Waste Plan. A 2010 proposal for a single hauler cooperative was dropped over price and freedom of choice, so the plan kept the open market and gave every hauler two duties: offer single-stream curbside recycling to any residential customer who asks, and offer a lower rate for a smaller cart. In its first year the number of Wichitans recycling through their hauler rose more than 17 percent. If your hauler refuses either one, contact Environmental Health at 316-268-8351 or email the Brooks Landfill Manager at ADean@wichita.gov.

The county’s Recycling Guide ↗ gives the countywide curbside list: cardboard and chipboard boxes, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, paperboard cans, plastic jugs, bottles and tubs, steel and aluminum cans, clean foil, and glass containers in every color. Containers do not need washing, lids can stay on, and greasy pizza boxes are fine. Never bag recyclables, and keep out plastic bags, Styrofoam, batteries and electronics, black and dark green plastic, chip bags, appliances, textiles, scrap metal and yard waste. Allen & Sons is the exception on bags: its tote takes clean, dry grocery bags.

Bulk items and yard waste

Wichita has no city bulk pickup. Your hauler is the first call: Allen & Sons collects bulky items and brush bundled in 4-foot lengths for an extra fee arranged in advance, and the other haulers quote by phone. Otherwise you haul it yourself.

  • Waste Connections transfer stations, 4300 W 37th St N (316-941-4320) and 5550 W 55th St S (316-252-3726). Sedgwick County encourages residents to self-haul tires, appliances, wood waste and brush here; they charge by weight, with $40 more for a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner that holds freon, $25 per mattress or box spring, and $8.25 per passenger tire, as the county’s guide lists them. Household trash from these stations goes to the Plumb Thicket Landfill in Harper County.
  • Brooks Landfill (the city’s construction and demolition landfill, details below) takes furniture, appliances, mattresses, tires and clean yard waste, but not household trash.
  • CDR, 4250 W 37th North, 316-942-8666, the county’s other construction and demolition landfill: Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; call for prices and bring cash. Furniture, freon-free appliances, masonry, roofing, drywall and lumber; no garbage, tires or hazardous material.
  • Yard waste: Brooks Landfill composts clean loads of grass clippings and leaves at the normal disposal charge and sells the finished compost. Air Capitol Eco Recycling, 302 W 53rd St North in Park City, 316-832-0400, takes grass, leaves, brush, raw fencing and pallets, nothing treated or stained. Mattresses cost $20 each at Brooks.

Wichita holiday trash schedule

There is no citywide holiday rule; each hauler runs its own routes. ICT Trash publishes the clearest one: it observes New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and when one falls on a weekday, pickup that day and the rest of the week moves one day later, with Friday routes on Saturday; a weekend holiday changes nothing. Next for ICT customers: Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026, when Thursday and Friday routes move a day, then Christmas, Friday, December 25, 2026, when Friday moves to Saturday, and New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2027. Allen & Sons sends holiday reminders by email and text ↗, and Waste Connections posts delays in its WasteConnect app. For WM, Kansas Waste Recovery, Waste Services of Wichita and English Rentals, ask your hauler.

Brooks Landfill closes on Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and at noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; the county hazardous waste facility is closed every Sunday and Monday.

Hazardous waste, electronics and drop-off sites

Household hazardous waste never goes in a cart. Sedgwick County took over the program from the city in 2002 and runs one permanent facility, doubled in size and reopened on August 19, 2025.

  • Sedgwick County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 801 Stillwell, Wichita, KS 67213, south of Kellogg off Seneca at Osage and Stillwell. 316-660-7458. Drop-off Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. Free for any Sedgwick County resident. Takes paint, aerosols, batteries, used motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, garden chemicals, household cleaners, fluorescent bulbs, propane, used cooking oil and unwanted medication, but no controlled substances. Businesses making less than 55 pounds a month can use the Small Quantity Generator program at 316-660-7464. The Swap and Shop (Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) gives away usable paint, fertilizer, aerosols and cleaners, 10 items a month per person.
  • Brooks Landfill, 4100 N West Street, Wichita, KS 67205, run by the City of Wichita Public Works and Utilities. 316-350-3225. March to October: Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to noon; November to February: Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to noon; closed Sunday and on observed holidays. A construction and demolition landfill: it takes remodeling, demolition and roadwork debris, tree debris and other vegetation, and charges $47.85 a ton for a secured load, $61.10 unsecured, $34 minimum. Freon-free appliances $10 each, freon items $50, mattresses and box springs $20, electronics $50, car and truck tires $10 plus $5 on a rim; clean concrete, brick, stone, asphalt millings and clean dirt free. Household trash is not accepted and costs $150 a ton if it is unloaded. Cash, Visa, Mastercard and Discover.
  • PRo Kansas Recycling Center, 725 E Clark, Wichita, KS 67211, a nonprofit the city and county both list. 316-269-1359. Tuesday and Thursday 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed on holiday weekends and when the forecast high is 25 degrees or below. Free recycling of #1, #2 and #5 plastics and stretchable bags, cans and some scrap metal, paper of every kind including shredded, glass of every color, books, print cartridges, cell phones, eyeglasses and rechargeable batteries.
  • Electronics: the county guide lists Brooks Landfill at $50 an item, Best Buy at $29.99 per TV, and free computer drop-off at Starkey, 4500 W Maple, and Goodwill stores. Alkaline batteries can go in the trash; lithium batteries go to a battery recycler or the county facility.

Fees and billing

Your hauler bills you directly, monthly or quarterly, at its own rate; the city adopts no residential rate and sends no trash bill. The only public charge is Sedgwick County’s solid waste fee on the property tax bill, which funds the hazardous waste facility and cleanup programs: $4.00 per base residential unit and $3.20 per high-density unit for the 2026 budget, down from $5.00 and $4.00. The published hauler rates above run from $22 a month (Kansas Waste Recovery) to $30 a month (Allen & Sons, billed as $90 a quarter) for a 96-gallon cart, with recycling a separate add-on of $12.67 to $35 a month.

Missed pickup and hauler problems

Call your hauler first, at the number on the city’s list above. If your hauler is not on the city’s list, if a truck carries no city decal, or if a hauler refuses to offer single-stream recycling or a smaller cart, contact the Department of Public Works and Utilities, Office of Environmental Health, at 316-268-8351 or email ADean@wichita.gov.

Set-out rules and fines

The city publishes no curbside set-out ordinance for residents; the rules come from your hauler’s terms. The published ones: Waste Connections wants carts within 2 feet of the curb by 4 a.m., ICT Trash by 5 a.m. with the lid closed, Waste Services of Wichita by 7 a.m., and Allen & Sons limits a 65-gallon cart to 200 pounds and a 96-gallon cart to 300. Illegal dumping in an alley or public right-of-way is reported to the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department through the city’s Report an Issue ↗ page, and dumping in someone else’s container to the police.
