How to read a holiday week
The one-day slide. The most common rule: nothing is collected on the holiday, and every pickup from that day to the end of the week moves one day later, with Friday’s routes served on Saturday. Phoenix and Los Angeles both work this way. Monday to Wednesday pickups in a Thursday-holiday week are unchanged.
Only the holiday’s own routes move. Some cities touch nothing but the day itself: Jacksonville moves only that day’s pickups to Saturday, Nashville serves a Tuesday-to-Friday holiday’s routes on the Monday of the same week, and Hillsborough County skips the day with no make-up day at all, so your next pickup is your next regular day.
No change. A few programs collect on the holiday. Miami-Dade County and Honolulu run on Thanksgiving, and Portland and San Francisco stop only for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Where a private hauler serves your street, as in Wichita or unincorporated King County, the hauler’s own notice is the rule.
