LA Sanitation & Environment, the City of Los Angeles department known as LASAN, collects the black trash bin, blue recycling bin and green organics bin every week at single-family homes and buildings of up to four units, plus brown manure bins where horses are kept. The day depends on the address. Bulky items go free by request. Buildings of five or more units and businesses are served through recycLA. The 24-hour Customer Care Center is 1-800-773-2489.
Serves: Los Angeles, California.
What they collect and how often
- Black bin: weekly trash, including plastic bags, Styrofoam and plastics #3, #4, #6 and #7.
- Blue bin: weekly recycling: paper, cardboard, cartons, metals, glass and plastics #1, #2 and #5.
- Green bin: weekly organics: yard trimmings, food scraps and food-soiled paper.
- Brown bin: weekly manure for homes with horses.
Find your collection day
LASAN’s home page links a Find Your Residential Collection Day tool. There is no citywide weekday.
Set-out rules
Bins go to the curb before 6 a.m. on collection day and must be off the curb by 8 p.m. that day. Bagged pet waste goes in the black bin. Overflow trash needs an Extra Capacity Tag. Broken or missing bins are repaired or replaced free through MyLA311 or Customer Care.
Holidays
Most holidays do not change collection, and a weekend holiday causes no delay. Still ahead in 2026: Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26), when Monday to Wednesday stay unchanged, Thursday bins go on Friday, November 27, and Friday bins on Saturday, November 28; and Christmas (Friday, December 25), when Friday bins go on Saturday, December 26. Indigenous Peoples’ Day (October 12) and Veterans Day (November 11) close City offices but do not change collection.
Bulk, brush and special items
Bulky pickup is unlimited and free, on your regular trash day. Request it at least one business day ahead online, in MyLA311 or by phone, with a list of items. LASAN takes furniture, mattresses, toilets, sinks, rolled carpet, doors and TVs or computers. It refuses auto parts, construction debris, paint, chemicals, medicines and cardboard except on a move-in/move-out pickup. Free bulky drop-off days run 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays, October 10, November 21 and December 12, 2026, at the East Valley, West Valley, Harbor and West LA yards and at 2201 E. Washington Blvd. Excess yard trimmings get one free brush pickup a year, and up to four tires a year go free to a LASAN district yard.
Hazardous waste, electronics and drop-off
S.A.F.E. Centers take paint, solvents, motor oil, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals and electronics free, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit; staff ask where the waste came from. Sites include Hyperion in Playa del Rey and the S.A.F.E. Center at UCLA. Public libraries take small batteries. No explosives, radioactive or medical waste.
Missed pickup and contacts
Wait until 6 p.m. on collection day, then report a missed bin or bulky pickup online or in the MyLA311 app, or call Customer Care at 1-800-773-2489, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Give your address, the bin color and whether it was a regular or bulky pickup. City offices close on more holidays than collection does.
What this is not
recycLA serves buildings of five or more units and businesses with its own haulers and holiday schedule; LASAN’s delay list does not apply there. Hazardous waste never goes in any LASAN bin.
