A cut fir is yard waste in January and a fire hazard if it sits indoors until March. The National Christmas Tree Association’s basic advice is consistent across cities: take off lights, ornaments, tinsel and the stand; do not burn the tree in a fireplace or wood stove.

What happens next is local and seasonal.
Typical municipal options
- A short curbside window, often the two or three collection weeks after Christmas.
- Staffed drop-off sites that chip trees into mulch.
- A yard-waste cart, if the tree is cut to fit and the city allows it.
- A fee-based bulky or brush route.
Flocking, metal stands and plastic bags usually disqualify a tree from chipping. Artificial trees are a different material — often PVC or PE — and rarely belong in the same pile.
Where dates republish each December
Do not copy last January’s date onto this winter. New York City runs Mulchfest; Austin runs a holiday-tree drop-off. Both republish their dates each December.
Cities with a seasonal yard-waste stream: Atlanta, whose posted yard-trimming weeks are specific dates rather than a standing rule, and Honolulu, where green waste alternates with recycling on the same base day.
Open your city’s page from States & Cities, or check drop-off locations and bulk pickup for the off-season route.
