Kawailoa Transfer Station in Haleʻiwa takes household trash, bulky items, appliances, tires, batteries, gas cylinders and e-waste free from residents, and has city blue bins for homes without curbside recycling. Its hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. Green waste is taken only on Saturdays and Sundays and is not composted.
Serves: Honolulu trash pickup and drop-off rules.
Before driving to Kawailoa
Honolulu allows residents two loads per day across its city disposal sites, including Hawaiian Earth Recycling in Wahiawā. Prepare items that can be cut or dismantled so that they are less than 6 feet long and weigh less than 60 pounds. Sort the load before unloading; staff do not help unload, and children and pets must stay in the vehicle.
A trailer or larger rental vehicle requires approval for a transfer station before the trip. Send vehicle details and the types of waste to disposal@honolulu.gov. The city’s ordinary vehicle rules cover sedans, SUVs, pickups and minivans carrying the householder’s residential waste; a rental agreement must be in that resident’s name.
The March 2026 closure
The city reopened Kawailoa to the public on March 6, 2026 after installing a replacement crane beside the public loadout area. That closure has ended. It is separate from temporary interruptions that the city says can occur because of heavy use or mechanical breakdowns. The reopening announcement calls the location 62-180 Kawailoa Drive; the record’s address is written as Kawailoa Road.
