US trash pickup schedules and local waste rules

Lāʻie Convenience Center

The city drop-off on the northern edge of Lāʻie, sharing a lot with the corporation yard across from Mālaekahana.

The Lāʻie Convenience Center, at 56-020 Kamehameha Highway, is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day; those hours stop only for Christmas and New Year’s Day. It sits on the mauka side of the highway, facing the Mālaekahana State Recreation Area, and cars reach it by a driveway along the south side of the city’s Lāʻie Corporation Yard. It began around 1988 as a refuse transfer station.

Serves: Honolulu trash pickup and drop-off rules.

What this center takes and what it does not

Residents bring household rubbish and bulky furniture, mattresses and carpet here, along with large appliances, green waste and whole natural Christmas trees. Tires from passenger cars and light trucks, home gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, car batteries, taped rechargeable batteries and e-waste have their own bins. Lāʻie is one of the six city centers that accept green waste; Wahiawā is the exception. Food scraps are turned away, and the e-waste bin takes no phones or GPS units.

About this site

The center occupies about 1.6 acres of an 8.188-acre city-owned lot it shares with the Lāʻie Corporation Yard. The Department of Design and Construction’s 2020 environmental assessment says the center, which ENV manages, is not part of the corporation yard’s master plan. The same document says the site opened around 1988 as a transfer station for residents’ household refuse and recycling and was later renamed the Lāʻie Refuse Convenience Center.

On April 1, 2026, the city Planning Commission voted 6-1 to recommend moving the whole 8.188-acre lot from the State Agricultural District to the Urban District. No one testified at the hearing. The commission sent its recommendation to the City Council, which decides the change.
