Northwest Residential Drop-Off Center

Houston city drop-off at 14400 Sommermeyer, on the Northwest Transfer Station site the city plans to rebuild.

The Northwest Residential Drop-Off Center, at 14400 Sommermeyer, keeps hours of Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It sits beside the city’s Northwest Transfer Station on a site bounded by Sommermeyer Road, Teague Road and Windfern Lane. The city has budgeted a new transfer station building there and a replacement for the depository’s staff building, destroyed in the May 2024 derecho.

Serves: Houston trash pickup and drop-off rules.

What this center takes and what it does not

Residents can leave mattresses, furniture (two large items), appliances, refrigerators whose refrigerant-removal tag is attached, tree waste, junk and recyclables here. Passenger tires are taken, five a visit and 10 a month, and so are 5 quarts of motor oil. Household garbage, TVs, paint, chemicals, dirt and concrete are not.

About this site

City pages also call the site the Sommermeyer Neighborhood Depository/Recycling Center; it was formerly referred to as the Windfern Depository. The depository page gives ZIP 77041, while the city’s facility map lists 14400 Sommermeyer under 77040. The grounds border a police station and Public Works facilities.

The adopted FY2026-2030 Capital Improvement Plan set aside $333,000 for a modular building to replace the staff building the May 2024 derecho destroyed.

The transfer station next door is to be replaced:

  • City Council awarded Tellepsen Builders a design-build contract for the Northwest Transfer Station Replacement Project on May 13, 2025, with $1,422,528.09 for pre-construction.
  • The FY2027-2031 Capital Improvement Plan budgets $17.676 million in FY2027 for the replacement.
  • The city’s 2024 bid documents projected construction to start in October 2026 and included asbestos and lead-paint surveys of the Sommermeyer depository building.
  • A July 2026 Planning Commission variance for the new 40,000-square-foot transfer station lists the site at 14421 Sommermeyer, 7.529 acres, and notes that it also includes the neighborhood depository.
