S.A.F.E. Center at UCLA
LASAN’s free household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off on the UCLA campus, closed for campus events.
The S.A.F.E. Center at UCLA sits on Charles E. Young Drive West on the UCLA campus, and its hours are Fridays, Saturdays and the first Sunday of the month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City of Los Angeles runs it; UCLA does not manage the program and sends questions to LASAN at 1-800-773-2489. It reopened on the campus on May 1, 2026.
Serves: Los Angeles trash pickup and drop-off rules.
What this center takes and what it does not
It takes household hazardous waste and electronics: paint and solvents, motor oil, filters and other car fluids, cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, aerosol cans, fluorescent and LED bulbs, propane and other gas cylinders up to 5 gallons, household, car and lithium-ion batteries, and TVs, computers, phones and cables. The City’s 2026 flyer for the UCLA site also lists unused medicine and needles and syringes packed in puncture-proof containers. Prohibited here: tires, which the six district yards take from City residents; green waste and bulky items; marine flares; laboratory waste; medical and biological waste; and oxygen, CO2 and acetylene tanks.
About this site
The center is on the UCLA campus in West Los Angeles, and the City of Los Angeles operates it rather than the university. Collection stops in rainy weather, and staff ask for the address the waste came from and a short survey on arrival. Besides the Thanksgiving and winter closures, it shuts for UCLA campus events such as commencement, Juneteenth, Independence Day and student move-in. Its winter closure runs December 25, 2026 to January 3, 2027, starting a day later than the other centers’. Waste left outside the facility counts as illegal dumping and can be fined.
Rules at every S.A.F.E. Center
City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County residents may use the S.A.F.E. Centers. Business waste is not accepted at UCLA; LASAN takes small-business waste by appointment at the Gaffey Street, Hyperion and Randall Street centers. The eligibility, limits and fees that apply at all of them are on LA Sanitation.
