The Middlebury Transfer Station at 1 Service Road is where Middlebury, Connecticut residents haul their own household trash and recycling. Entry needs a free permit sticker, and commercial waste is refused. Trash, food waste and listed recyclables are free; bulky loads, tires and some appliances are charged at the scale. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Serves: Middlebury, Connecticut.

Hours and permits

The station is closed Sunday, Monday and Connecticut state holidays. Every vehicle must show a current permit sticker, issued free at the scale house by the entrance to anyone with a Connecticut driver’s license at a Middlebury address and a registration naming Middlebury as the tax town. New residents can show a mortgage statement, tax bill or utility bill at the scale on each visit until they have one.

What is accepted and what it costs

There is no charge for household trash, food waste or recycling: paper and cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic containers under 3 gallons with caps off, #3 to #7 containers up to 3 liters, cans, foil, cartons, glass, large rigid plastics, scrap metal, motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries, clothing, electronics, bulbs and rechargeable batteries.

Stop at the scale with anything charged. Bulky waste and construction debris cost $10 flat for a load up to 200 pounds; a load over 200 pounds is charged 7 cents a pound. Tires are $5 up to 18 inches and $10 over 18 up to 22 inches. Freon appliances are $10. The fee list still shows $3 for a 20-pound propane tank and $2 for a small helium tank, while Public Works now offers a free service for household gas cylinders through The Cylinder Collective, so ask at the scale. Clean, dry mattresses and box springs go to a recycling program free; the attendant can charge $50 each for wet or stained ones.

What is not accepted

Commercial waste, paint, gasoline, pesticides and other chemicals, mercury products, medical waste and sharps, ammunition, sealed containers, liquids, animal carcasses, bricks, rocks, dirt and stumps. Branches over 4 inches thick or 6 feet long are refused, as are rims, tires over 22 inches and propane tanks over 20 pounds.

Holidays

Besides its Sunday and Monday closures, the station closes on Connecticut holidays. Public Works posts the next closure on its page, and the full year is in the 2026 hours and holiday schedule. Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2026, falls on a regular Monday closure. The station is closed Thursday, November 26, and Friday, November 27, for Thanksgiving, and open Saturday, November 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. It keeps its usual 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. hours on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, and is closed on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25. The schedule gives no 2026 date for Veterans Day, so call 203-758-1616 before a trip on Wednesday, November 11.

Hazardous waste, electronics and drop-off

Electronics, fluorescent bulbs and rechargeable batteries go free at the station. Paint and household chemicals go to the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments’ collection events, held three times a year, rain or shine, at host sites around the region and free to Middlebury residents with proof of residency. The cap is 50 pounds of waste per resident unless arranged by email by the Monday before the event, with no limit on household paint. Dates and sites are posted on the council’s hazardous waste calendar, Connecticut DEEP’s collection schedule and the town’s News Flash. Between events, the council points to PaintCare drop-off sites.
