Austin Resource Recovery reviews have a useful official source: the City’s survey of customers who used on-demand bulk, brush or household hazardous waste collection. Respondents rated those services highly, while department reports describe scheduling, participation and set-out challenges. These results concern the surveyed services, not every Austin household or every weekly cart collection.

Serves: Austin, Texas; see the Austin trash pickup schedule for pickup days, holidays, bulk rules and drop-off sites.

What they collect and how often

Trash goes in a brown cart, in one of four sizes; the bill follows the size. The green compost cart takes food scraps and yard trimmings. Recycling goes loose and unsorted in the blue cart.

Find your collection day

My Schedule on austintexas.gov builds a calendar for the address, exports it to Google, iCal or Outlook and sends text, email or phone reminders. The Austin Recycles app does the same. In a condo or townhome, search the street address without the unit.

Set-out rules

Carts go out by 5:30 a.m., lids closed, at least 5 feet apart and clear of cars, mailboxes, bike lanes and sidewalks. Bag and tie trash; never bag recycling. Extra trash bags beside the cart cost a fee and must weigh 35 pounds or less, 40 gallons at most. Extra recycling is free in a box or bin no larger than the cart. The crew takes up to 15 extra compost items beside the green cart.

Holidays

Only three holidays move collection: New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If your day falls on one of them, or later that week, it slides one day. A holiday on a Saturday or Sunday slides nothing. My Schedule shows each slide.

Bulk, brush and special items

Book through the app, My Schedule or 3-1-1; set out by 5:30 a.m. Bulk takes furniture, appliances with doors removed, household carpet and up to eight passenger tires without rims, in three separate piles. It refuses brush, cardboard, mirrors, tile, remodeling debris and household trash. Brush must be 5 to 15 feet long, in one loose row no more than 15 feet across and 4 feet high. Smaller branches go with weekly compost.

Hazardous waste, electronics and drop-off

On-demand hazardous waste pickup takes paint, batteries, cleaners, pool chemicals and similar items, up to 30 gallons, set where crews can reach it, out of rain and sun and never at the curb. The Recycle and Reuse Center, by appointment, is free for Austin and Travis County residents and takes hazardous waste, TVs, computers and appliances; tires cost $6 each. It does not take furniture or mattresses. Brush goes to Hornsby Bend, no appointment needed.

Missed pickup and contacts

Call Austin 3-1-1 (512-974-2000) or email ARR after 4 p.m. on the missed day and within two business days. A return trip for a cart set out late costs $20.50 per stream. To change cart sizes or add a free blue cart, call 512-494-9400.

What this is not

Buildings with five or more units must use a private hauler. Hornsby Bend is an Austin Water plant, not an ARR site. At-home hazardous waste pickup is for ARR curbside customers.

Austin Resource Recovery reviews and complaints

The City’s February 19, 2026 on-demand program report says participants were randomly selected from customers who received one or more on-demand services during the program’s first six months. Its table shows five-star responses of 88.2% for bulk collection, 88.0% for brush and 94.6% for household hazardous waste. These are separate service results, not a department-wide customer rating.

The April 1, 2026 presentation repeats those results and describes practical problems:

  • Bulk and brush set-outs can be blocked by obstacles or left out without appointments.
  • Mixing materials, construction debris and excessive tires creates collection problems.
  • Household hazardous waste packaging can leak or create unsafe reactions.
  • Participation varies by council district, and the department describes targeted education to improve awareness.

Those bullets summarize the department’s findings; they are not allegations from individual reviewers. The survey ratings are customers’ reported views of the on-demand services they used. They should not be read as a complaint count or a satisfaction estimate for all Austin residents.

The March 25, 2026 performance update reports 99.7% combined residential collections on time in its FY2026 Q1 year-to-date column. That operational measure is different from survey satisfaction: it measures collection performance, not whether customers approved of the service.
