Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling, part of Public Works, collects garbage and organics every week on the same day and recycling every other week from City-provided carts, mostly at buildings with one to four units. City crews serve half of the customers and the contractor Minneapolis Refuse Inc. the other half. The city’s collection day lookup shows your dates and recycling week.
Serves: Minneapolis, Minnesota.
What they collect and how often
Garbage and organics go weekly on the same day; recycling goes loose in the blue One-Sort cart every other week. Yard waste goes weekly on garbage day in season: the 2026 season began the week of April 6, and the last pickup is the week of November 30 to December 4. Garbage must be bagged and fit under a closed lid.
Find your collection day
Enter your address in the collection day lookup. It returns the next garbage and recycling dates, and its monthly calendar names your recycling week, ABE or CD. The tool does not confirm that an address has city service. Sign up there for recycling reminder emails, which also flag holiday delays.
Set-out rules
Carts must be at the alley or curb line by 6 a.m.; crews may come any time until 6 p.m. Curbside carts must be pulled back by 7 a.m. the next day. Up to two extra bags may sit beside the cart now and then, but not in personal containers.
Holidays
When a major holiday falls on a weekday, collection runs one day late for the rest of that week; a weekend holiday changes nothing. Still ahead in 2026, collection is delayed one day for Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26), the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 27) and Christmas (Friday, December 25). Indigenous Peoples Day (October 12), Veterans Day (November 11), the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve do not change collection.
Bulk, brush and special items
Crews take up to two large items a week, each marked “For Solid Waste” and out by 6 a.m. Wood furniture and couches go on garbage day. Appliances with fridge doors removed, electronics, mattresses and metal items go out on your recycling week and are picked up the next business day. Keep mattresses dry. Building materials are never collected at the curb.
Hazardous waste, electronics and drop-off
Paint, motor oil, chemicals, tires, auto parts, liquids and rechargeable batteries are banned from city carts; alkaline batteries may go in the garbage. Hennepin County takes household hazardous waste at its Bloomington and Brooklyn Park drop-off facilities, Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with proof of residency. City garbage customers also get up to six cleanup vouchers a year for the South Transfer Station, each good for one trip with up to 2,000 pounds of garbage and building debris plus two large recyclable items.
Missed pickup and contacts
Call the office the business day after a miss. After two business days the crew may not come back, and an email report may arrive too late. If the cart was not out, crews do not return. Solid Waste & Recycling: 612-673-2917 or SWRcustomer@minneapolismn.gov, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
What this is not
City service means City carts marked “property of the City of Minneapolis.” Properties with dumpsters or a private hauler’s carts do not have city collection and should ask their hauler. A Minneapolis Refuse Inc. truck in your alley is still city service. Saint Paul runs its own program through Saint Paul Public Works.
