The Knoxville trash pickup day change takes effect Monday, October 5, 2026. Waste Connections, the City of Knoxville’s contracted waste and recycling collector, is moving about 19,000 households to a new every-other-week recycling day and 2,800 households to a new weekly garbage day, so a home’s trash and recycling fall on the same weekday (City of Knoxville). Check your own address before you roll a cart out.

What changes on October 5
The city’s stated reason for the reset is simple: one weekday for both carts. Makenzie Read, the city’s waste and resources manager, said households on a single day will “make fewer trips putting their carts on the curb,” and that one day is easier to remember, which should cut down on missed pickups (City of Knoxville). The household counts, the October 5 start and the same-day goal were reported independently by WATE on September 18, 2026, and repeated in the city’s own newsletter on September 22, 2026.
Who is not affected
Customers on backdoor pickup keep their current service. The city’s newsletter says plainly that backdoor customers are not part of the reroute (Neighborly Notice, September 22, 2026). Downtown residents whose solid waste is collected by City of Knoxville Public Service crews, not Waste Connections, are also outside the change (WATE, September 18, 2026).
How to check your new collection day
Waste Connections mailed notices to customers whose service day moves, and pushed the same word through the Waste Connect mobile app to users with notifications turned on (City of Knoxville).
If you did not get one, or you deleted it, use the city’s own Service Day lookup at KnoxvilleTN.gov/ServiceAndSort. The two official sources describe the tool a little differently: the city’s release says it shows both the current day and the new day, while the September 22 newsletter tells customers to use it after October 5 to see the new day. Either way, the city tells anyone unsure to check email and app notifications and put both carts out on the new day during the week of October 5.
For help during the switch, Waste Connections lists 865-522-8161 and an online support page at waste-connections.hatchable.site. The city’s own line is 311, or 865-215-4311, with email at 311office@knoxvilletn.gov (City of Knoxville). The newsletter says Waste Connections “will respond to reported missed collections related to the route changes” during the transition (Neighborly Notice).
What this is not
This is not a weekday anybody can hand you from a map. None of the official notices name a street, route or neighborhood that moves, so no page, hauler brand site or state directory can tell you your day. The address lookup is the only answer.
