Painesville’s trash hauler is now Major Waste Disposal Services. City Council voted 6-0 on May 18, 2026, to join Willoughby Hills’ contract with Major Waste instead of extending Republic Services, and Major Waste made its first pickups on Monday, June 29. Your collection day stayed the same (City of Painesville).

How the council chose

Republic’s ten-year contract ran out on June 30, 2026. While the city negotiated an extension, Major Waste offered to let Painesville “piggyback” on the contract it had already won through competitive bidding in Willoughby Hills. Ohio Revised Code Section 9.48 allows that. Painesville came in under the second year of that contract, whose term began in April 2026.

Republic then matched Major Waste’s price sheet line for line. So council had two resolutions on May 18. The Republic extension failed 0-6. Resolution 31-26, the agreement with Willoughby Hills for service by Major Waste, passed 6-0. The new agreement took effect July 1.

What residents pay

The all-in rate for weekly trash, bulk, yard waste and recycling is $23.43 a month in year 1 (2026-2027), then $24.13, $24.86 and $25.60. After four years the contract can run year to year for up to five option years, topping out at $27.97. Residents 65 and older get a discount of about $1 a month. A 30-gallon bag costs $4.12.

Republic had offered the same rates. Two lines differed. Major Waste charges no cart delivery, removal or exchange fee; Republic’s contract carried $50 per cart. And collection at city buildings, free under Republic, costs the city about $12,000 a year with Major Waste.

Major Waste bills residents directly. It mailed billing instructions, with online payment and a customer portal, in early July 2026. Anyone still on Republic autopay was told to cancel it before July 1.

What changed at the curb

  • Same day, new truck. Your traditional collection day did not change.
  • Same cart sizes. A 96-gallon trash cart and a 64-gallon recycling cart. Major Waste began delivering them the week of June 15. Republic collected its blue carts after the final week of June 22 to 26.
  • Weekly recycling and weekly seasonal yard waste. The city lists both as significant changes, along with the senior discount.
  • More plastics. Recycling used to take plastics No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5. Major Waste takes No. 1 through No. 7.

What this is not

It is not optional for houses. City Ordinance Chapter 955 requires owners of one-, two- and three-family dwellings to keep service with the city’s selected contractor.

It is not the end of the Republic dispute either. The city is in court with Republic over a $50 per-can fee Republic has billed residents. In its August 8, 2026, statement the city said it cannot yet advise residents whether to pay. That fight is about the old contract, not Major Waste’s bills.
