Florida trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state, and your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, Miami and Tampa collect curbside themselves; Jacksonville collects in one service area and contracts haulers for the rest. Florida has a ban on yard waste in landfills, but no statewide bottle deposit, PaintCare paint, mattress or electronics recycling program.
Find your city
- Hillsborough County — county service for the unincorporated area and New Tampa through three franchise haulers. Garbage twice a week, recycling and yard waste weekly; Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City collect for themselves.
- Jacksonville — Solid Waste Division with Meridian Waste and Waste Pro. Weekly garbage and yard waste, recycling every other week.
- Miami-Dade County — county collection for unincorporated areas plus ten listed cities. The City of Miami runs a separate department.

- Tampa: City of Tampa Department of Solid Waste and Environmental Program Management. Household garbage is collected twice a week and recycling and yard waste once a week for City of Tampa utility customers, while New Tampa residents are served by Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management. Who collects in Florida
- Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management — municipal department
- Florida Statute 403.706 requires every county to give residents the opportunity to recycle, with a program designed to recover at least four of newspaper, aluminum cans, steel cans, glass, plastic bottles, cardboard, office paper and yard trash. Source ↗
National haulers (Republic Services, WM, Waste Connections) hold contracts in many places; the city or county names the hauler for each street.
State-level rules
- Container deposit: No statewide container deposit law. NCSL’s page on state beverage container deposit laws says ten states and Guam have a deposit-refund system, and Florida is not among them. Source ↗
- Paint: Not a PaintCare state. PaintCare’s state list covers twelve states and the District of Columbia, and Florida is not among them. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
- Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council runs Bye Bye Mattress programs only in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Oregon, so Florida has no mattress stewardship program. See mattresses. Source ↗
- Electronics: No statewide electronics law. Florida DEP states that Florida has no specific laws or regulations that apply to discarded electronic products, so there is no statewide manufacturer take-back law or electronics landfill ban. Source ↗
- Yard waste: Banned from landfills statewide. Florida Statutes section 403.708 subsection 12 bars disposal of yard trash in lined Class I landfills unless the landfill runs an active gas-collection system and puts the gas to beneficial use. Source ↗
State agency
- State agency: Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Division of Waste Management, Waste Reduction Section. DEP sets Florida’s solid waste rules, permits waste facilities and tracks county recycling rates, while counties and cities run the collection programs residents actually use. Official website ↗
