Indiana trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state.

Your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, Indianapolis collects in part of the city itself and contracts a hauler for the rest; Fort Wayne and Evansville contract a private hauler. Indiana has an electronics recycling law and a ban on yard waste in landfills, but no statewide bottle deposit, PaintCare paint or mattress program.

Find your city

  • Indianapolis — Public Works in four districts, LRS in seven. Weekly trash, monthly heavy trash; recycling is a paid subscription.

Other large cities and their official collection pages:

  • Fort Wayne: City of Fort Wayne Solid Waste Management (Public Works); GFL Environmental is the city’s garbage and recycling hauler. Garbage is collected once a week in each residential neighborhood and single-family households pay $22.81 a month as of July 1. Official page ↗ Look up your collection day ↗
  • Evansville: Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (city utility that bills the service); Republic Services of Evansville collects. Trash is collected weekly and recycling every other week on the same day, with one free trash cart and one recycling cart per customer. Official page ↗

Who collects in Indiana

  • A solid waste management district is the local county’s authority for recycling, yard waste and household hazardous waste services in every Indiana county except Marion. Source ↗

National haulers (Republic Services, WM, Waste Connections) hold contracts in many places; the city or county names the hauler for each street.

State-level rules

  • Container deposit: No statewide container deposit law. Indiana is not among the ten states with a beverage container deposit law listed by the Connecticut Office of Legislative Research (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Vermont). Source ↗
  • Paint: Not a PaintCare state. PaintCare lists programs in twelve states and the District of Columbia; Indiana is not one of them. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
  • Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council says its Bye Bye Mattress program operates statewide only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. See mattresses. Source ↗
  • Electronics: Indiana’s Electronic Waste law (IC 13-20.5) prohibits households, small businesses and schools from putting e-waste in the trash and makes video display device manufacturers pay for collection and recycling. Source ↗
  • Yard waste: Banned from landfills statewide. Indiana Code 13-20-9 bans disposal of leaves, brush and woody matter over three feet long from landscaping or land clearing in a solid waste landfill; grass and short bagged material are exempt. Source ↗

State agency

  • State agency: Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Office of Land Quality. IDEM permits and inspects solid waste facilities and its recycling section gives technical help to communities and points residents to their county solid waste management district. Official website ↗
