New Hampshire trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state.

Your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, Manchester and Nashua collect curbside themselves; Concord contracts a private hauler. New Hampshire has an electronics recycling law and a ban on yard waste in landfills, but no statewide bottle deposit, PaintCare paint or mattress program.

State-level rules

  • Container deposit: No statewide container deposit law. New Hampshire is not among the ten states with a beverage container deposit law (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Vermont). Source ↗
  • Paint: Not a PaintCare state. PaintCare says it operates programs in twelve states and the District of Columbia, and New Hampshire is not one of them. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
  • Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program operates only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. See mattresses. Source ↗
  • Electronics: TVs, monitors, computers, portable electronics, computer peripherals and media players are banned from disposal in New Hampshire landfills and incinerators under RSA 149-M:27. Source ↗
  • Yard waste: Banned from landfills statewide. It is against the law to dispose of leaves, grass clippings, garden debris and small or chipped branches in New Hampshire landfills and incinerators, a ban established in 1993. Source ↗

State agency

  • State agency: New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), Waste Management Division - Solid Waste Management Bureau. The Solid Waste Management Bureau permits and inspects landfills, transfer stations, recycling and composting facilities under RSA 149-M, and provides solid waste planning and technical assistance to towns, businesses and the public.
