New York City Department of Sanitation began full enforcement of official NYC Bins for trash on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The requirement itself dates to June 1, 2026. The warning period ran through September 7.

This applies to properties with 1–9 residential units that receive DSNY collection, and to special-use buildings on DSNY routes such as city agencies, nonprofits, houses of worship and professional offices in residential buildings.

The official NYC Bin is required for trash setout. Recyclables may still go out in any container or in a clear plastic bag. Compost can go in a marked bin with a lid. Separate official recycling and compost bins exist; they are not required.

Property owners and building managers buy the bins. Tenants are not the named purchaser on DSNY’s FAQ. DSNY’s bin FAQ lists fines that increase with each new offense: $50, then $100, then $200. The August 26, 2026 press release described a $50 summons for properties that are not using NYC Bins for trash.

Official bins are sold at Home Depot stores in the five boroughs. A STAR reimbursement window for eligible one- and two-family owners ran through September 8, 2026.

What this is not

Empire Bins — the larger stationary on-street containers — are not a citywide requirement today. DSNY says properties with 31 or more units will use Empire Bins; 10-to-30-unit buildings will choose between Empire Bins and official NYC Bins. Empire Bins are in use in Manhattan Community District 9. The department says the program expands to Brooklyn Community District 2 in the fall and is planned to be citywide by 2032. Do not tell a one-family household in Queens that it must use an Empire Bin.

Look up the address collection day on DSNY’s collection schedule tool. This story does not assign a weekday.
