Hawaii trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state, and your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii County and Maui County collect curbside themselves. Hawaii has a bottle deposit and an electronics recycling law, but no statewide PaintCare paint or mattress program.

Find your city

  • Honolulu — City and County Department of Environmental Services. Gray refuse weekly; green waste and blue recycling alternate on the same base day. GROW food-waste eligibility is address-specific.

Other large cities and their official collection pages:

  • Hawaii County: County of Hawaii Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division. The County has no curbside rubbish or recycling pickup, and private companies offer that service island-wide. Official page ↗
  • Maui County: County of Maui Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division. County curbside refuse pickup is a paid, account-based service in six districts: Central Maui, Makawao, Lahaina, Hana, Lanai and Molokai. Official page ↗

Who collects in Hawaii

  • Honolulu Environmental Services — municipal department
  • For household trash, the state Health Department refers residents to their county: the Hawaii County and Maui County Solid Waste Divisions, Honolulu’s Refuse Division or Kauai County’s Solid Waste Division. Source ↗
  • State law bans lead-acid batteries from household rubbish and landfills; they must go to a battery retailer or wholesaler or a DOH-permitted collection or recycling facility. Source ↗
  • Whole motor vehicle tires may not be disposed of at municipal or private landfills; take them to a tire retailer or wholesaler or a DOH-permitted tire collector or recycler. Source ↗

National haulers (Republic Services, WM, Waste Connections) hold contracts in many places; the city or county names the hauler for each street.

State-level rules

  • Container deposit: Hawaii has a bottle deposit law. Consumers pay a 5-cent refundable deposit plus a 1-cent non-refundable container fee on each labeled HI-5 beverage container and get the 5 cents back at a redemption center. Source ↗
  • Paint: Not a PaintCare state. Hawaii is not among the states in PaintCare’s fee table, which lists every state where PaintCare operates. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
  • Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council runs Bye Bye Mattress only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. See mattresses. Source ↗
  • Electronics: The Electronic Device Recycling and Recovery Law requires manufacturers to operate recycling programs for computers, printers, monitors, TVs and other listed devices; no statewide electronics landfill ban was found in DOH sources. Source ↗

State agency

  • State agency: Hawaii Department of Health, Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch, Solid Waste Program. Its Solid Waste Program handles statewide solid waste planning, solid waste facility permits, monitoring, enforcement and statewide recycling programs. Official website ↗
