Idaho trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state, and your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, Boise, Meridian and Nampa contract a private hauler. Idaho has no statewide bottle deposit, PaintCare paint, mattress or electronics recycling program.

Who collects in Idaho
- DEQ says counties in Idaho are required to ensure citizens have adequate household waste disposal options, so the local program is run by the county rather than the state. Source ↗
- DEQ says burning household trash, dumping waste on public land or disposing of waste at an unauthorized site is illegal in Idaho, and residents may burn household trash only where trash service is not available. Source ↗
National haulers (Republic Services, WM, Waste Connections) hold contracts in many places; the city or county names the hauler for each street.
State-level rules
- Container deposit: No statewide container deposit law. NCSL says ten states and Guam have beverage container deposit systems, and Idaho is not one of them. Source ↗
- Paint: Not a PaintCare state. PaintCare says it operates programs in twelve states and the District of Columbia; Idaho is not among them. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
- Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council says its Bye Bye Mattress program operates statewide only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. See mattresses. Source ↗
- Electronics: No statewide electronics law. DEQ says many county landfills collect TVs, computers and other electronics separately for recycling and tells residents to contact their county solid waste department, describing no statewide landfill ban or manufacturer take-back law. Source ↗
- Yard waste: No statewide landfill ban. DEQ lists the landfill among the alternatives to burning yard waste and says many landfills offer free or reduced fees for it. Source ↗
State agency
- State agency: Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Waste Management and Remediation Division — Solid Waste Program. It authorizes and inspects Idaho’s solid waste facilities under the Idaho Solid Waste Facilities Act and the Solid Waste Management Rules, sharing oversight of landfills and open dumping with the counties and the state’s public health districts.
