Louisiana trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state.
Your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, New Orleans and Shreveport collect curbside themselves; Baton Rouge contracts a private hauler. Louisiana has no statewide bottle deposit, PaintCare paint or mattress program.
Find your city
- Lafayette — LCG Environmental Quality Division with Acadiana Waste Services. Garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky items once a week on one day, by address lookup.
Other large cities and their official collection pages:
- New Orleans: City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation. The city offers once-weekly curbside trash collection to residential properties of four units or fewer and small businesses; the French Quarter and Downtown Development District are on a separate schedule. - Baton Rouge: City of Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge — Department of Environmental Services (collection under contract by private haulers). The monthly solid waste fee covers twice-a-week garbage collection for one cart plus once-a-week recycling and once-a-week out-of-cart bulky and yard waste collection. - Shreveport: City of Shreveport Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Division. Garbage and trash are collected once a week in a city-provided 96-gallon wheeled cart, and the city’s recycling program is suspended. Official page ↗

Who collects in Louisiana
- LDEQ collects recycling information from cities and parishes and reports on how each area is doing to the Louisiana Legislature each year. Source ↗

National haulers (Republic Services, WM, Waste Connections) hold contracts in many places; the city or county names the hauler for each street.
State-level rules
- Container deposit: No statewide container deposit law. Louisiana is not among the ten states with a beverage container deposit law listed by the Connecticut Office of Legislative Research. Source ↗
- Paint: Not a PaintCare state. PaintCare lists programs in twelve states and the District of Columbia; Louisiana is not one of them. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
- Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council says its Bye Bye Mattress program operates statewide only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. See mattresses. Source ↗
State agency
- State agency: Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ), Waste Permits Division. LDEQ issues solid waste, hazardous waste and waste tire permits, gathers recycling information from cities and parishes for an annual report to the Legislature, and lists local recycling resources.
