Missouri trash pickup is run by cities, counties and private haulers, not by the state.
Your pickup day comes from your city’s or hauler’s own lookup. Among the largest cities, Kansas City and St. Louis collect curbside themselves; in Springfield residents hire their own hauler. Missouri has an electronics recycling law and a ban on yard waste in landfills, but no statewide bottle deposit, PaintCare paint or mattress program.
Find your city
- Joplin — Republic Services under the city contract: one trash cart weekly at $17.42 a month, recycling and yard waste every other week, bulky items by appointment.
Other large cities and their official collection pages:
- Kansas City: City of Kansas City Public Works Department. Weekly curbside trash and unlimited recycling are provided to single-family homes and apartment buildings with six units or fewer, on a day assigned by neighbourhood, Monday to Friday. Official page ↗ Look up your collection day ↗
- St. Louis: City of St. Louis Refuse Division. Service falls on Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday; roll-cart households get household trash on the first day, yard waste on Wednesday and recycling on the second day, and yard waste collection stops for the winter. - Springfield: no city collection: residents contract private haulers. Curbside trash and recycling are provided by more than 10 private, independent licensed hauling companies, and every licensed Springfield hauler is required to offer curbside recycling. Official page ↗

Who collects in Missouri
- Missouri is divided into 20 solid waste management districts that plan and fund local recycling services; residents can pick their county from a dropdown to find the district that serves them. Source ↗
- Most Missouri households use a trash collection service or haul waste themselves to a landfill or transfer station, and some rural areas offer a ‘green box’ dumpster near a central county road that is usually emptied once a week. Source ↗
National haulers (Republic Services, WM, Waste Connections) hold contracts in many places; the city or county names the hauler for each street.
State-level rules
- Container deposit: No statewide container deposit law. Missouri has no beverage container deposit law; the Connecticut General Assembly’s Office of Legislative Research lists the ten bottle-bill states as California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Vermont. Source ↗
- Paint: Not a PaintCare state. PaintCare lists twelve states and the District of Columbia where it operates paint stewardship programs, and Missouri is not among them. Leftover paint goes through the local household hazardous waste program; see paint. Source ↗
- Mattresses: No statewide mattress take-back program. The Mattress Recycling Council operates programs only in states with mattress recycling laws: California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. See mattresses. Source ↗
- Electronics: Missouri’s Manufacturer Responsibility and Consumer Convenience Equipment Collection and Recovery Act requires computer manufacturers to run a department-approved free recovery plan for household computer equipment, but DNR says most electronics from residences may still legally be discarded with household trash. Source ↗
- Yard waste: Banned from landfills statewide. Section 260.250 RSMo bars yard waste from solid waste disposal areas since January 1, 1992, except at a landfill or landfill portion the department has approved to operate as a bioreactor whose gas is used to generate electricity. Source ↗
State agency
- State agency: Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Quality — Waste Management Program. Issues solid waste permits, inspects and enforces against landfills, haulers and illegal dumps, and funds and supports local recycling through the state’s 20 solid waste management districts.
